Showdown: 2009 Honda City or Toyota Belta (Vios) facelift?

With the all-new Honda City coming to Malaysia before 2008 comes to a wrap, this new B-segment sedan is set to entice present City owners to 'upgrade'. Perhaps some of the previous generation Toyota Vios owners as well?

Have your pick...

12minutes in a New Toyota Vios 1.5G!

By Dr Long

I am not going to pretend like this is a test review of the new Toyota Vios because it isn’t, for the 12 minutes spent on-the-road is very brief. After a really short round in the driver’s seat this is what I can say:

1) The engine is sprightly for a 1.5L N/A unit but still sounded coarse towards 4000-5000rpm (noisy air induction), something I hoped would've been dampened out with this new generation

2) Ride is pretty soft, smooth and comfortable

3) Interior is better looking than its predecessor, centre-position meters’ housing being slimmer and wider now, hence less of an eye-sore. Two-tone interiors airy and classier to a certain extent

4) Steering, being an electric-powered unit is light

5) Front seats thigh support ‘lengthier’ now

6) Rear cabin space is appreciably more generous as well

7) Chromed outer door handles are strangely missing on the 1.5G, even absent on the ‘top-spec’ 1.5S!

8) The new Vios E's alloy rims are hideous half-baked items (vs the E-spec predecessor)

For those looking for a good, reputable, modern, no-frills and economical-to-run sedan now - or in 2008 - look no further if your budget is less than RM90k and you must have a brand-new unit. A word of advice though, you can skip the 1.5S, save that few grand by settling for 1.5G. It’s good enough for all practical reasons!

All-New Toyota Vios Prices 'Leaked' ahead of Launch in Malaysia

As with most new blockbuster launches from UMW Toyota in Malaysia, prices will be known (estimated) to the car buying public a month or two prior to official launch. The upcoming 2nd(Thai and Singapore markets-only 1st gen Soluna not taken into account) generation Vios is no exception.

Here are the indicative prices (OTR inclusive of insurance):
Vios 1.5S - RM88,600
Vios 1.5G - RM85,300

Apparently, there will be no 1.5J spec Vios for the meantime...only by next year perhaps?

Toyota VIOS at Bangkok Motor Show 2007

By Dr Long

For Wheels was there at the just concluded Bangkok International Motor Show 2007.
Local pricing of the new Vios ranges from Thai baht 509,000 to 699,000.
Here are some images of the most 'significant' new model launch at the annual Bangkok motoring event:

A common after-market conversion look to be 'dressed-up' by Malaysian Toyota owners for upcoming new VIOSes in the not too distant future: TRD VIOS as pictured here.

Over here in Malaysia, the all-new Toyota VIOS is expected from UMW Toyota sometime Q4 2007.

All-New 2007 Toyota VIOS: Below RM70k?

By Dr Long

A lower-grade (truly entry-level) all-new VIOS variant is reportedly (source: The Edge Daily) being planned by UMW Toyota for greater market appeal and expand sales for 2007 in Malaysia. Estimated to be priced just under RM70,000, this will be another Avanza-like hit sequel for UMWT.

Expect very basic kit for this super-budget 1.5L Japanese branded sub-compact sedan with steel rims, zero chrome garnish (both inside and out), manual folding mirrors, basic instruments and likely without even a single airbag or ABS. Possibly there would be a continuation of two variants - of this 2nd gen Vios - soon in Malaysia. Therefore, it remains uncertain whether the 1.5E model will be discontinued, since the top-trim 1.5G will surely remain.

Rumours are also going around that this ‘J’ model may be a 1.3VVTi version utilizing the same engine as the Perodua Myvi! If this turns out to be true, this lower capacity VIOS could be equip with a manual tranny.

In Thailand, all 3rd gen VIOS variants have standard ABS, even for the entry-level 1.5J, but without any airbag. Meanwhile in Singapore, the VIOS 1.5E has twin airbags while the 1.5J make do with only a driver's airbag.

So it’s a juggling act for UMWT to choose – for the upcoming sub-RM70k VIOS 1.5J - between a single airbag or ABS or discard BOTH...in interest of costs and profitability!
